Calcium-based stones, like marble, limestone, travertine, and some quartzite, are sensitive to acidic substances such as lemon, lime, orange juices, vinegar, wine, and some hand soaps. Acids damage these stones by creating dull spots commonly referred to as etch marks and water rings. Countertop etching is probably the most common form of stone damage in the home. Through the experienced use of various diamond pads and polishing powders, etch marks are removed and the surface is brought back to a highly polished or honed finish.
